how to join local user to connect with same username in domain / domain controller / AD DS connect to

To join a local user account to a domain with the same username, you'll need administrative access to the computer and the domain. The process involves migrating the user's profile from the local account to the domain account while ensuring the username remains the same. Here are the general steps to achieve this:

1. **Create the Domain User Account**:

   - Log in to a computer that is part of the domain with administrative credentials.

   - Open the Active Directory Users and Computers management console (dsa.msc).

   - Navigate to the appropriate Organizational Unit (OU) or container where you want to create the user account.

   - Create a new user account with the same username as the existing local user account.

2. **Backup Local User Profile (Optional)**:

   - Before proceeding, it's a good idea to back up the local user's profile to ensure you don't lose any data or settings. You can use Windows' built-in User State Migration Tool (USMT) or other third-party tools to perform the backup.

3. **Join the Computer to the Domain**:

   - On the computer where the local user account exists, join it to the domain:

     - Right-click on "This PC" (or "My Computer") and select "Properties."

     - Click on "Change settings" under "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings."

     - In the "System Properties" window, click the "Change" button.

     - Choose "Domain" and enter the domain name.

     - Provide administrative credentials for the domain when prompted.

     - Restart the computer to complete the domain join process.

4. **Log in with Domain Account**:

   - After the computer restarts, log in using the domain user account with the same username as the previous local user account.

5. **Migrate User Profile (Optional)**:

   - If you backed up the local user's profile, you can now use the backup to migrate the settings to the domain user account. Again, you can use tools like USMT or other migration utilities to accomplish this.

6. **Transfer Files and Settings (Optional)**:

   - If you didn't migrate the user profile, you can manually transfer files, settings, and application configurations from the old local profile to the new domain profile.

Remember that joining a computer to a domain will change the user's profile path, so it's essential to back up any critical data and settings before proceeding. Additionally, it's recommended to test the process on a test computer before performing it on a production system to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any data loss or unexpected issues.
